CCS Affiliated Event – Sport and Active Recreation: Disability Participation and Non Participation Study

As the recently released Crawford Report on Australian Sport identifies, Australians love sport and active recreation, but research has shown that people with disabilities participate less than the rest of the community. UTS School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism researchers Simon Darcy, Aron Murphy, Tracy Taylor and Dan Lock were successful in their application to the Australian Sports Commission to conduct research on the participation and non-participation of people with disabilities in sport and active recreation. This research is in addition to the Australian Sports Commission’s elite sport development programs for athletes with disabilities and their work with disability specific sporting organisations. The research is aimed at two groups: 1) broad-based participation of people with disabilities to understand the factors that affect the participation, the constraints they face and the benefits they receive from sport and active recreation; and 2) disability service organisations whose primary focus is not sport and active recreation provision. The findings will be used to review current approaches to sport and recreation and to improve access provisions.
