Jamila has a long interest in multiculturalism and in the experiences of migrants in western society. She has a Masters in Comparative Law and a Diploma in Shariah Law and Practice from the International Islamic University Malaysia, as well as a B.A. and LLB from Sydney University.
Her experience includes a number of years in legal practice working predominantly in the family law field, as well as teaching and researching in the School of Southeast Asian Law at Northern Territory (now Charles Darwin) University in Darwin. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at UTS, teaching Asian Law and Legal Systems and Islamic Law.
Her research is currently focused on the experiences of Muslim women in Australia, particularly in relation to family law, alternative dispute resolution and their participation in the religious life of their communities.
