Dr Nina Burridge

Dr Nina Burridge is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Technology, Sydney. She has been involved in tertiary education since 1991 in various education faculties in Australian universities. Her main research interests centre on Indigenous education and more recently ethno-cultural diversity in schools and in communities. She was the founding director of the Institute of Aboriginal Studies and Research at Macquarie University from 1997 – 1999. She has published chapters, articles and presented papers at national and international conferences on her main research areas. In 2008 she undertook a study tour in the USA, Europe and the United Kingdom presenting her research and exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by schools and communities as globalisation and multiculturalism becomes a reality for many countries.

She sees herself as an activist professional whose involvement in community organizations and social action groups informs her professional work in Education. She holds a number of community based positions including chairperson of the Don Chipp Foundation, board member of the Burdekin Association – a non-profit organisation working with homeless youth and she is involved with a number of local community groups dealing with social, political and cultural issues.

She is a member of several important professional bodies including:

* Member of Australian College of Education
* Member of the Australian Association for Research in Education
* European Association for Research in Learning and Instruction
* Chairperson of the Don Chipp Foundation

Awards/Citations

Her work in the community and in politics has been recognized with citations in /Who’s Who of Australian Women/ 2006 – 2008 and /Who’s Who Australia/.

In 2007 she received the /Edmund Rice Centre / Human Rights Award for outstanding service in campaigning for human rights for ‘Indigenous, Refugees and Asylum Seekers.’

Teaching Areas:

Sociological and philosophical aspects of education, professional practice in secondary schools, Indigenous education and Secondary history education.

Research Areas:

Indigenous education including reconciliation studies, multiculturalism and cultural diversity in schools development of professional learning communities. Current research projects include a project funded by the Brencorp Foundation on representations of cultural diversity in school settings with the Centre for Popular Education at UTS and the Australian Government’s Quality Teaching Program projects.

Community and Professional Activities:

Nina is a member of a number of professional associations including the Australian College of Education and the Australian Association for Research in Education and hold various community based positions including Chairperson of the Don Chipp Foundation, Board member of the Burdekin Association, a member of the Community Advisory Committee Sydney Harbour Federation Trust and the Sanctuary Foundation at North Head.
